The bot message format took Facebook's message format as starting point and generalized it with the main goal of having a message format that is both general and expressive enough to be used across a range of different communication channels -- covering plain text channels like SMS, messenger channels like Facebook Messenger, Telegram, and Slack, and voice channels like Alexa. The result is a format that specifies messages on a semantic level and tries to abstract from layout details as much as possible.
